After a breakfast (say 8:00 am in my apartment ?) I propose to walk towards the old port.
The itinerary of the day consists of several emblematic places of Marseille: the Basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, the Vallon des Auffes, Malmousque and Endoume neighbourhoods with ports and calanques. In the afternoon we will walk along the coast and admire the view of the old port from the Pharo park. If we have time we will visit the Panier neighbourhood and come back at home by taking gateways of the museum called MUCEM.
Morning (9h - 12h30)
First, take time to look at the Savonnerie of Marseille to smell the famous soaps of Marseille. Next step consists to climb hills to reach the Basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde called « la Bonne Mère » by people of Marseille who consider the virgin Mary as protector of sailors.
(point 1 on the roadmap)
Admire the 360 degree view of the city with the Frioul islands and calanques. Take few minutes to visit the basilica. Inside, several boat models decorate the ceiling. They represent offerings of the sailors to ask protection to the virgin Mary for their next travels.
Then, we will walk towards the Vallon des Auffes, one of the most beautiful places to lunch in Marseille (point 2 on the roadmap). If you agree I can book a table at chez Jeannot at 12:30 pm. The restaurant proposes italian food with delicious pizzas and pasta around 25€ per person. If you prefer, we can also eat one of the best bouillabaisse of the city to chez Fonfon restaurant. You have to count 62€ per person. Both of the restaurants offers a great view on the Vallon des Auffes. (point 4 on the roadmap)
If we have time before lunch, we will walk on the coast towards the Malmousque and Endoume neighbourhood (point 3 on the roadmap). I love walking in the narrow streets where vegetation and coloured houses are present. We will also take a look to a little port and take an access to the calanque (see picture below). If you want to swim it will be possible.
The calanque of Maldormé on the picture below is known to be a good place to swim and snorkel.
Afternoon (14h30 - 18h)
The afternoon, we will go back to the old port by the coast. We will make a stop at the Pharo park to admire an amazing view on the old port, the Fort Saint Jean, the MUCEM and the cathedrale La Major. (points 5 & 6 on the roadmap)
From the old port, we will walk towards the Panier neighbourhood in the narrow and shady streets. Located in the oldest part of Marseille, this neighbourhood is impregnated by artistic tags. There are a lot of artisanal shops and the famous house of pétanque, the national sport in Marseille. (point 7 on the roadmap)
The Panier is near the musem called MUCEM, a big cube made of stylized concrete. We could go inside the MUCEM, admire the sunset from its rooftop and come back at home by taking its gatways.
Evening
Regarding what you prefer to do, I propose to have dinner in my apartment and have a drink outside, either in the old port or in a cocktail bar called the Gaspard.
Dear Marc and Doaa,
I am absolutely amazed by this wonderful itinerary. Thankyou so much. It all looks amazing. I hope we will get to meet Simon for some of the time. Hughie and Katharine will be with us for the first of our nights in Marseilles then they have hired a motor scooter to explore the countryside for 3 or 4 days. Sarah and Pat will join us on our second or third day. Thankyou again, we really appreciate the thought and planning you have put into our time with you. Can't wait to see you all. Greetings from Sarajevo,
Merryn XXX
