The green island is the only wooded island in the Bouches-du-Rhône. From the old port of La Ciotat, the shuttle takes you to this little piece of land in 15 minutes for €14 return trip per adult and €9 return trip per child. The 2 km trail, very well laid out and marked, goes around the island passing through the two calanques of Seynerolles and Saint-Pierre, the Plageolle and the fort Saint-Pierre at an altitude of 49m at the top of the island. Practical points, there is no trash can or toilet on this island. Also provide plenty of water in case of high temperatures.
The island had a strategic position during the Second World War, when the Germans transformed it into a real entrenched camp. The American bombardments of August 12, 1944 destroyed the fortifications, leaving only ruined blockhouses and many craters that you can admire. From the top of the island, opposite, a magnificent view of the "Bec de l'Aigle" and the bay of La Ciotat awaits you. The "Bec de l'Aigle" is a 155m high rock so called by its shape, a beak at the top and wings folded in the back.
Personally, I love going for a swim in the Calanque de Seynerolles (pictured below), it's the largest on the island, although the space to lie down is small. Do not hesitate to take your mask and snorkel and swim along the rock on the right. The cliff delivers some faults where the marine life is very present.
The last departure from the island is at 5:30 p.m., which gives you time to come back for a drink on the terrace in the old port of La Ciotat.
FYI, I usually go to the green island by canoe. If you have your own, you won't depend on the shuttle schedules and can avoid the world. From the Calanque du Mugel, the island is not far, it usually takes me 25 minutes while paddling quietly. Park in the Mugel car park and inflate your canoe. There is an access to immerse yourself in the water on the right of the calanque du Mugel. Just check the weather conditions before you go, especially the wind speed.
