The Carry Nation is one of my favorite addresses in Marseille. It's a hidden cocktail bar, inspired by Speakeasy, a type of American clandestine bar, particularly widespread during Prohibition where bootleggers hid to make, sell or consume alcohol.
The bar takes its name from Carrie Amelia Nation, an emblematic woman whose action led to the prohibition of alcohol in the United States between the 1920s and 1933.
I prefer not to spoil you the decoration and the atmosphere of the bar, the surprise of the first time is worth it. The Carry Nation offers a classic menu of highly sought-after signature cocktails. Each cocktail is meticulously crafted and tasted until the most perfect balanced blend is achieved. Some cocktails, for example, require preparations with several hours of infusion. The waitresses and waiters also offer a top-of-the-range service with an exchange of knowledge about the world of the bar and the products used. The classic menu changes every season, depending on the bartenders' wishes.
The Carry Nation also organizes themed evenings on a weekly basis such as “Les liqueurs Monastiques” which introduces spirits with medicinal properties made from plants. In particular, I was able to taste the "last world" cocktail based on green chartreuse, added to the classic menu of the bar. I personally really liked the week on the theme of rums from the Ferroni house, founded in Aubagne near Marseille, or even the week on the theme of the 13 desserts of Provence.
To join the bar and taste its cocktails, there is only one solution: book on their website. Indeed, you will not find the address on the internet and you will not be able to enter without having reserved upstream. I advise you to book in advance for the evenings of Friday and Saturday evenings. The bar is closed on Mondays.
The bar also offers atelier to learn and taste cocktails!
Above the Irish coffee from Carry Nation, an incredible balance between hot coffee and whiskey.
